CELEBRATING OUR COUNTRY IN DOUBT: A
QUESTION BEGGING PATRIOTIC ANSWER
By
Chijioke Akusoronwa
Nigeria, a
country in West Africa, on the Gulf of Guinea, south of Niger, known to being
the Giant of Africa is still on its way to its track. It became an independent
member of the British Commonwealth in 1960. The question of history becomes
imperative because the country Nigeria has existed even before the coming of
the colonial masters which implanted most modified existing systems and
structures that has today become a burden to our development.
But
scholars have argued on how these colonial systems had been the bane of our
burden. Most of their arguments have posited that, even though the systems: like
free independence, federal structures and economic exploitative tendencies
where still planted to continue neo-colonial rule after independence, but these
scholars have vehemently argued that we are largely part if not the cause of
our misfortune.
The
burden of history to me is that Nigeria; especially our so called leaders have
lost contact with the dreams that propelled our independence. Even though Tafawa
Balewa was of the opinion that, it was not yet time for our independence while
most African countries were having theirs but, the motion by Enahoro and other
nationalist with great intention from our soldiers who fought in 2nd World War
and the lessons of economic exploitation by British in the 1930’s is no lesson and a forgotten history
thus a burden at 50 for NIGERIA.
We rule ourselves...we rule our failure and burden to our HISTORY
Nigeria,
at 50 is just dwindling in everything. You would agree with me that a lot of
people would say that there have been some progress... its true to be false,
but the question that should come to mind is poised on how much of these changes
have benefited you and I. How much of the growth in education, health, wealth,
laws, policies, security, information technology, sports, transport,
electricity, military to mention a few, in our celebrated years had benefited
in rational and growth proven statistic as compare to how little these points
were of benefit in the last 60yrs.
Today, Nigeria claims to be growing to
becoming among the twenty world economies in the world by the year 2020, given
our independence since October 1, 1960. But, we all must not forget that the
federal structure of today independence is a product of 1914 amalgamation which
1960 is a by-product. Today, we celebrate, but sincerely we have not really been
able to show vividly what every single Nigerian had benefited from her dear
country since her independence in 1960.
I believe in my country
Nigeria that in spite of all that we are faced with in all facet of life we are
born to be a great country. The question is how? I will say that the
rising literacy level and consciousness of Nigerian especially the Nigerian
youths is a foot at the right direction. Even though they say that our
graduates are not employable but, forgetting to understand that those so called
their poor graduates are leveraging with that poor standard of education thus changing
their world while building themselves to coming out and confront the likes of our
leaders who claim that the youth of today have little knowledge of Nigerian
history as if we didn’t go to primary school at all.
Today, you will agree with
me that every home knows that the task of building a great united country
is in their hands and that nobody can denial them of their rights no matter how
little of their rights they know. Today, we witness the rising active involvement
by every single individual in politics in order to evade the selection of
dubious political representatives. This conscious awareness is a result of the trend
of change that Nigerians need. The time of parochial attitude to public
affairs will soon end thus replacing accountability, competency, transparency
and trust on our representative at all levels.
THE CHALLENGES OF TOMORROW IS WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW
BUT, THE FACTS OF TODAY IS WHAT WE ALL FEEL AND SEE, SO IT'S IN OUR HANDS TO
MAKE TOMORROW BETTER...by starting today to
building our tomorrow... NOW!!!
